Am I being too harsh?

A recent conversation between a friend and I.

Me: How was your Easter?
Friend: It was good. Got to visit with family, eat a lot of ham. How about you?
Me: My son stole from church.
Friend: What? From the collection bucket?
Me: No, he took a toy truck from the kids room.
Friend: Oh, what happened?
Me: I saw him throw something under his bed when we got home from church. I dug it out and it was the truck that my husband had told him to leave behind. So I made him write a letter to the church, took money out of his piggy bank to pay for an envelope and stamp, and we mailed it back.
Friend: Wow - you mean business.
Me: Yes, I do.
